A breast reduction removes excess breast tissue, fat and skin to create smaller, lighter breasts that sit higher on the chest. It often relieves neck, back and shoulder pain, and makes exercise and clothing more comfortable. No implants are involved.
Large breasts can cause ongoing pain in the neck, shoulders and back, grooves from bra straps, rashes under the breast and difficulty staying active. Many patients also feel their size is out of proportion with the rest of their body.
During a reduction, tissue is removed from the lower part of the breast and the remaining tissue is lifted and reshaped. The nipple and areola are moved higher and can be made smaller. The incision usually runs around the areola and down the breast, and often along the fold.
